Some of the finest carved stelae in the Maya world — 45 minutes from The Toucan Inn, and rarely crowded.
Nim Li Punit — "Big Hat" in the Q'eqchi' Maya language — is a Late Classic site in the Toledo District. It's small enough to walk in a couple of hours, but the stelae here are considered among the tallest and most detailed in the Maya world.
Getting there
About 45 minutes south of The Toucan Inn on the Southern Highway, signed near the village of Indian Creek. A short paved access road leads up to the visitor centre.
What to see
- The small on-site museum with the original carved stelae under cover.
- The Plaza of the Stelae and the ballcourt.
- Views over the Toledo lowlands from the upper plaza.
Pair it with
Continue 25 minutes further to Lubaantun for a full Maya day, or stop for lunch in Punta Gorda on the way back.
Practical tips
Bring sun cover, water, and small US or Belize dollar bills for the entry fee. A guide is not required but a good one turns a 45-minute visit into a memorable morning — we can arrange one.
