Day-trip guide

Lubaantun.

The 'Place of Fallen Stones' — cut-stone pyramids on a ridge in Toledo, an easy morning from The Toucan Inn.

Lubaantun is unusual among Maya sites: the pyramids are built from precisely cut limestone blocks without mortar. It's a peaceful, uncrowded ridge-top site near the village of San Pedro Columbia in the Toledo District.

Getting there

About 70 minutes from The Toucan Inn: south on the Southern Highway, then inland from the Southern Highway past Nim Li Punit toward San Pedro Columbia. The last stretch is a good dirt road.

What to see

  • The main plaza and Structure 10 — the tallest pyramid on site.
  • Two ballcourts, unusual for a site of this size.
  • Views over the Rio Grande valley from the summit platform.
  • The small visitor centre with artefact displays.

Pair it with

Combine with Nim Li Punit for a full Maya day, and add lunch with a Q'eqchi' or Mopan family in San Pedro Columbia — we can arrange this in advance.
