The Garifuna are descendants of West African, Carib and Arawak people who arrived on Belize's southern coast in 1832. Their language, music and food are recognised by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Dangriga is the heart of it.
Getting there
About 75 minutes north of The Toucan Inn on the Southern Highway. Easy to combine with a Cockscomb morning on the way north.
What to do
- Gulisi Garifuna Museum — the essential first stop for context.
- Drumming workshop at the Lebeha Drumming Centre in nearby Hopkins.
- Try hudut — mashed plantain in a coconut fish stew — at a local kitchen.
- Visit a workshop making traditional drums or cassava bread.
Best time to visit
Any time of year, but Garifuna Settlement Day on 19 November is extraordinary — reenactments, all-night drumming, and dawn ceremonies on the beach. Book your room early.
